-아도/어도 되다 vs -(으)면 되다
Beginner · TOPIK I
-아도/어도 되다 gives permission ('it's OK to…'); -(으)면 되다 states a sufficient condition ('you just need to…, and that's it').
Rules of thumb
- Asking for or giving permission: -아도/어도 되다 (여기 앉아도 돼요? 'May I sit here?').
- Giving instructions, saying that one thing is enough: -(으)면 되다 (이 버스를 타면 돼요 'You just take this bus').
- Negative counterparts: -(으)면 안 되다 'must not'; 안 -아도 되다 / -지 않아도 되다 'don't have to'.
- Asking how to do something: 어떻게 하면 돼요? 'What should I do?' — not -아도 되다.
