   To spread or widen the distance between two objects that are close or attached to each other.

   Korean definition: 가까이 있거나 붙어 있는 둘 사이를 넓히거나 멀게 하다.

   • 지수가 민준이를 보자 입을 벌려 활짝 웃었다.

     When Jisu saw Minjun, she opened her mouth and smiled broadly.

   • 그는 다리를 벌리고 축 늘어진 자세로 의자에 앉아 있었다.

     He was sitting in the chair with his legs spread apart in a slouching posture.

   pry open; open; split

   To pry open a shell, etc., to allow the substance inside to show.

   Korean definition: 속이 드러나도록 껍질 등을 열어 젖히다.

   • 그녀는 석류의 껍질을 잘라서 벌린 다음 알맹이를 빼 먹었다.

     She cut the pomegranate skin, pried it open, and picked out the seeds to eat.

   • 우리는 잘 익은 조개의 껍데기를 벌려서 속에 든 살을 꺼냈다.

     We pried open the shells of the cooked clams and took out the meat inside.

   spread out; open

   To spread out or open something that is closed.

   Korean definition: 오므라져 있는 것을 펴지거나 열리게 하다.

   • 아이는 주먹을 쥐고 있던 두 손을 벌려 내게 내밀었다.

     The child opened her two clenched fists and held them out to me.

   • 열심히 모이를 쪼아 먹던 새가 날개를 벌리더니 날아올랐다.

     The bird that had been busily pecking at feed spread its wings and flew up.
