난리

   A state of being chaotic without order due to flood, earthquake, drought, etc.

   Korean definition: 홍수, 지진, 가뭄 등으로 질서가 어지러운 상태.

   • 우리 마을은 매년 장마가 되면 넘치는 물로 난리를 겪는다.

     Every rainy season, our village is thrown into chaos by overflowing water.

   • 홍수로 이 지역이 모두 침수돼서 사람들이 잘 곳도 다 잃고 난리가 났어요.

     This whole area was flooded, so people lost even a place to sleep and it was total chaos.

   (figurative) The act of making a noise about something out of surprise or excitement.

   Korean definition: (비유적으로) 놀라거나 흥분하여 소란스럽게 떠드는 일.

   • 사람들은 한정된 할인 상품을 먼저 사려고 난리를 쳤다.

     People made a huge fuss trying to be the first to buy the limited sale items.

   • 소풍을 나온 아이들은 기분이 좋아 웃고 떠들며 난리이다.

     The children out on the picnic were in high spirits, laughing and chattering noisily.
